Traditional meals are looked over increasingly as we make our lives convenient to fit the needs of modern living. Dinners look more like sandwiches and pizzas now, where in the past they consisted of garden-grown and foraged items and whatever meat was available from hunt, catch, trap, or trade. Where most of us may be satisfied with a quick meal, there is something special that really drives home that unique ambiance that comes with a traditional meal. Most frontier-style meals may look something like a plate of slow-cooked venison with a side of locally foraged berries turned into a relish. Fresh potatoes and greens from the surrounding area were common on the plates of frontiersmen, as they were readily available and easily stowed away in pantries. Grains produced, such as cornmeal and flour, were kept and added in for gravy and thickening agents for stews, leaving a full and satisfied belly at the end of their meal.

On Saturday, Jan. 24, Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is hosting a Frontiersman Dinner set to serve at 3:00 p.m., 4:20 p.m., 5:50 p.m., and 7:20 p.m. Tickets are priced at $35 for adults, while children ages 12 and under dine for $17. The menu for the dining event entails carved bison loin with horseradish cream, breaded catfish and hush puppies, smoked pulled wild boar, hunter’s stuffing, bison chili, and many other delightful dishes mustered up from the great frontier. On site, there will be a chef and kitchen team preparing and serving throughout the event to ensure satisfactory dining experiences for attending parties. Along with this event is the lodging special, which consists of a night’s stay in the lodge, the Frontiersman Dinner, and a hot continental breakfast.

Beverages listed for the event are Coke products, iced tea, and coffee. No entertainment is scheduled; however, the Greenbo Lodge encourages musicians and performers to reach out or take interest in the events for future bookings. Pies and cakes will be available as dessert, too, for all of those after-meal sweet cravings.

An event aimed at supporting and honoring age-old traditions of our ancestors and settlers of this region is brought to fruition with a dining event that will take us back from the modern world we live in to the open ranges and rolling hills of our great state of Kentucky. From wild boar to fresh-caught fish, the Frontiersman Dinner with Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is a dining event with wholesome foods and camaraderie in mind. Whether you are looking to travel back in time through a dining table, reminisce on grandma’s cooking, or honor those who came before us, this dining event may be just what the chef ordered.

Information about the Frontiersman Dinner can be found on the Greenbo Lake State Resort Park Facebook page, parks.ky.gov/events for Jan. 24, or by calling the resort at 606.473.7324. Reserve those tickets now to ensure a place in the dining room or at the lodge, as the event scheduled over 400 attendees with the lodge’s 2025 Frontiersman Dinner. With the popularity of such a fun dining experience, tickets are expected to move quickly. Join in the fun and travel back in time to when modern life was still a dream and meals came from our forests and streams with Greenbo Lake State Resort Park’s 2026 Frontiersman Dinner.
