The Grand Opening of Judith Knife Company

Gideon Thompson

The Ashland Beacon

Smiling, bearded faces and eager voices welcomed me as I approached the entrance of Judith Knife Company. A strong and jovial “hello” from owner and operator Jonathan Wessel instantly let me know – I had arrived somewhere special.

Stepping inside revealed a world all its own, filled with artisan-crafted metalwork that evoked tales of medieval times and legendary hunters and huntresses. From one end of the store to the other, locally made knives, hatchets, cooking tools, and swords gleamed under the lights, each one seeming to sparkle with personality and precision.

A lively flow of conversation filled the air, centered around detailed discussions of smithing and crafting techniques used to produce the items for sale. I watched as customers and business professionals alike admired the craftsmanship and the care poured into every piece on display.

The grand opening of Judith Knife Co. took place on April 9, 2025, at 11:30 a.m., marking a strong start for a thoughtfully placed and passionately run business. Located in the heart of the shopping plaza at 8110 Purple Heart Highway, U.S. 60, Judith Knife Co. is surrounded by a thriving business community. Just steps from the front doors are places to dine, relax, or even enjoy a cigar – making it a perfect spot for locals and visitors alike.

When asked what inspired the creation of Judith Knife Co., Mr. Wessel replied, “Quality and availability of handcrafted knives and cutlery for everyone.” His mother, Judith, is also a driving force behind the store – her name proudly graces the storefront. Mr. Wessel shares, “He wishes to carry her with him on his journey and share her name with the world as he establishes his store and invites a community filled with other artisans who may bring with them whatever craft or trade, they have mastered.”

Judith Knife Co. isn’t just about exquisite metalwork – it’s also about education and opportunity. The company will soon offer classes and workshops in blacksmithing, inviting anyone curious about the art of metalwork to discover its magic. Details on how to attend will be made public shortly.

In addition to its educational offerings, Judith Knife Co. provides consignment opportunities for artisans looking for a storefront. If you’d like to consign your knives or utilitarian metal items, Mr. Wessel is happy to help you showcase your work.

Several talented vendors contributed to the development of this inspiring new venture, including:

  • Ohio Fire Studios – Donald Kocian

  • Black Fly Custom Knives – Caleb Ballou

  • Irwin Cross

  • Cliff Side Ironworks – Casey Cobs

  • Roger Coburn

  • Ashland Engraving – Mitchell Vincent

Whether you're in search of high-quality knives and cutlery, a fresh perspective on traditional craftsmanship, or a welcoming community of makers, Judith Knife Co. has something for you. Judith Knife Co. is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday’s from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information you can call 606.254.4096, or by visiting www.judithknifeco.com, or by reaching out on the store’s Facebook page.
