Barbecue: it’s more than just food—it’s a time-honored tradition, a cultural staple, and, in some circles, a full-on competitive sport. Said to have originated in the Caribbean, the word barbacoa—a Taino term—describes the act of cooking meat over an open flame. Once it took hold in the United States, BBQ began its steady rise as one of the nation’s most beloved culinary experiences. Over time, it’s evolved into a rich and smoky tapestry of regional styles and techniques, with each pitmaster putting their own flavorful twist on this ancient method.

Today, BBQ exists in many mouthwatering forms: brisket, ribs, pulled pork, dry-rubbed and slow-smoked cuts, vinegar-based sauces, sweet glazes, savory marinades—you name it. From Memphis to Kansas City, Texas to the Carolinas, each region’s approach to BBQ is uniquely delicious. Whether grilled, smoked, or cured, one thing’s for sure: BBQ is serious business. And Ashland is about to host some of the best.

Get ready for the return of one of the Tri-State’s tastiest traditions—the 4th Annual Tri-State BBQ Brawl, where meat-smoking titans will go head-to-head in an epic summertime showdown. Set to sizzle on June 22, this year’s event will take place in the Paramount Arts Center parking lot, located at 1322 Winchester Avenue in Ashland, Kentucky.

Each year, crowds gather to celebrate BBQ greatness, sample savory creations, and enjoy a day full of smoky goodness and summer vibes. Back by popular demand is Goats with Guns BBQ, known not only for award-winning meats but also for their irresistible homemade side dishes. Competitors will fire up their smokers and grills in pursuit of cash prizes and brag-worthy trophies, proving their pitmaster prowess as music and laughter fill the air.

And it’s not just for foodies—there’s fun for the whole family. Kids can cool off at the splash pad, giving them a break from the summer heat while parents make the rounds from booth to booth.

Feeling competitive? Bring your bean bags and your A-game to the cornhole tournament, which kicks off at 1:00 p.m. Team registration costs $50, with a $200 splash-the-pot bonus raising the stakes. The winning team walks away with 60% of the pot, second place takes 30%, and third place nabs the remaining 10%. Spots are limited, so early arrival is encouraged if you want to register and claim your shot at cornhole glory.

The BBQ Brawl will run all day and into the evening, giving attendees plenty of time to check out local vendors, enjoy live entertainment, and reconnect with friends and neighbors. Whether you're chasing down the perfect rack of ribs, tapping your foot to live music, or just soaking in the sunshine, there's something for everyone at this sizzling summer celebration.

Interested in participating? Reach out to Tri-State BBQ Brawl on Facebook to register as a vendor or competitor. Whether you're a BBQ enthusiast, a cornhole champion, or simply looking for a great way to kick off the summer, this event promises to deliver.

Come hungry, bring your friends, and get ready to feast. We’ll see you at the Brawl!
