Growing older can be full of challenges, not the least of which is the subtle—or sometimes not-so-subtle—decline of our bodies. Bodyworx in Russell is diligently working to slow this process and extend safety while reducing the risk of falls for seniors through screening, risk assessment, and exercise. A new program in May will focus on just how to accomplish feeling, moving, and living better.

STEADI is a CDC initiative designed to assist in Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths & Injuries. “We’re working to be a good community partner, and we want people to know about this so they can come in and get screened,” Bodyworx partner Brad Profitt explained. “They don’t have to have to go through their physician, they can come in and get screened and we tell them if they’re a fall risk.”

Building on this screening, Bodyworx has developed an exercise program in their office called STEADI & STRONG. It will be PT-supervised, and patients will be screened through the STEADI program. “Our intent is to help you reduce that fall risk and stay independent. We want to help people age well, keep them steady and strong,” Profitt shared, adding, “We can do that through offering this program.”

The process will involve STEADI program screening, a balance test, and, if the patient is not at major fall risk and is determined to have the ability to participate without contact guarding or side-by-side attention (as would be required in a formal therapy session), they can enroll. “These folks are going to be up and down, walking around, standing on foam, they’re going to be working with Therabands,” Profitt explained. “This program is designed to take that individual that is slowly seeing some decline and they want to try to get back some of that strength and some of that agility and vitality that they had.”

Signing up is easy. Call 606.836-MOVES and tell Patti you’re interested in the STEADI and Strong class. Classes start May 13 at 10 a.m., held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m to 11 a.m. When one class fills up, another class will be added. No referral is needed. This is not physical therapy—it’s an opportunity for people to age well and take initiative. The cost is $5 per class or $30 per month.

Why would you want to take a class like this? Bodyworx is helping people age well. Not everybody needs formal physical therapy. “It’s like blood pressure, for example. They call blood pressure the silent killer, because a lot of people don’t know they have it until they have a heart attack or stroke,” Profitt detailed. “A lot of people don’t realize they’re a fall risk, until they have a fall, and some people are one fall from being a nursing home resident because of a hip fracture or shoulder fracture, or some other injury.”

Another benefit is for those who are socially isolated. Part of this class will promote socialization among similar age groups.

“Feel Move Live Better. I think this type of program goes really well with that tagline,” partner Neil Evans shared. “Being able to help people move better, feel better and live better is what Bodyworx is all about. Any opportunity we have to do that is exciting of itself.”

Jeremy Stephenson, a partner, also declared, “I really feel like it gives us a way to give back to the community. Just helping others is very rewarding. We just want to give back to the community as much as it’s given to us.”

“We want to be a community partner, but our office in a lot of ways is really our mission field. The Lord sends them to us, and we get to share with them and witness to them. It’s a beautiful thing,” Profitt added. “We all have our own unique testimony of what the Lord’s done for us, how we’ve gotten to the place where we are, we don’t try to hide that. It’s important to us to be a beacon of light for the community.”

Bodyworx is a unique practice. They offer all the benefits of chiropractic and physical therapy—and much more. Some of the services offered include manual/manipulation therapies, massage/myofascial therapies, therapeutic exercise, post-op joint care, sports injury care, dry needling, one-on-one personal training, Limber Lab, nutritional counseling, and pelvic therapy.
