A Courageous Journey with Tonya Cordial

Facing breast cancer head-on is a physically and mentally demanding challenge that can have devastating effects that linger for the rest of a person's life. The trauma can begin with the fear of the unknown that accompanies the diagnosis and continues through the physical deterioration that may result from treatment. Chemotherapy, radiation, and experimental treatment strategies can all become part of the fight for survival as patients wage war against an invisible threat.

Internal and external factors can also make a significant difference in recovery. Dietary changes, spiritual growth, and exercise can influence how someone perceives their situation and helps them make positive lifestyle changes throughout their journey. Although every survivor's story is different, one thing remains certain: the need to follow medical recommendations and continue appropriate monitoring and preventative measures even after breast cancer has been declared in remission. With time and perseverance, cancer survivors can move forward with greater comfort and relief after enduring their difficult experiences.

One breast cancer survivor who has fought through a long and challenging journey is Tonya Cordial, a resident of Flatwoods, Kentucky, who has overcome a multifaceted battle with cancer. When asked how she discovered that she had cancer, Tonya explained, “I still had a lump after a mammogram that I was still worried about. I have had cancer twice before, so I often worry more when I feel any type of nodules/lumps. After a few months, the lump was still there so I made an appointment with my provider, and she scheduled me for another mammogram. 2/8/24 I had the mammogram and they wanted to do a needle biopsy right then. I obviously did not have the results in, but it was pretty much at that point when the journey began.”

For Tonya, her journey has had a positive outcome, and she now has the opportunity to look toward the future with support from friends, family, and the community. With her husband, CJ, by her side, Tonya has begun her recovery after undergoing a double mastectomy and chemotherapy as part of her breast cancer treatment.

When asked about her breast cancer journey and what stood out most during treatment, Tonya elaborated: “When I look back on this entire journey, it's the emotions that I remember more than any single event. One of the things I remember most about treatment wasn't a specific moment, but the countless moments of kindness and compassion I experienced from the staff at KDMC (now UK HealthCare) in Ashland. From my oncologist, Dr. Pathak, to the oncology team, Dr. Lopez, the radiology team, and honestly everyone I encountered there, always treated me with genuine care and respect. Their support made some of the hardest days a little easier to face.

“A more difficult moment that had stayed with me happened when I thought I had reached the end of my cancer journey, only to learn I was beginning a completely new chapter. After completing my initial treatment plan, I went in for what I believed would be my final mammogram. While I was there, doctors became concerned about a lump that had been there and recommended another needle biopsy. When the results came back showing cancer, I was told that a double mastectomy was the best course of treatment.

“Hearing that news was devastating. The mastectomy was one of the hardest things I have ever faced emotionally and mentally, and I wasn't prepared for how deeply it would affect me. It's difficult to look in the mirror and not fully recognize yourself. Chemotherapy had already changed my appearance by taking my hair (and then came back in curly), and the double mastectomy felt like it took pieces of me. Looking back now, that experience taught me that surviving cancer isn't just about getting through treatment. It's also about learning how to rebuild, heal, and rediscover yourself afterward.”

There is never an easy road to recovery when dealing with breast cancer. Each journey is unique and complicated by challenges that many people may not fully understand until they experience them firsthand. One of the most valuable sources of strength during a breast cancer battle is the support survivors receive from friends, family, and the community along the way.

As a breast cancer survivor and an associate in the billing department at Ramey-Estep Homes, Tonya brings hope to others through her positive outlook and continued encouragement. She has an uplifting message to share with anyone facing a similar struggle:

“Take it one day at a time and give yourselves grace. It’s okay to have good days and bad days, to feel scared, to cry, and to ask for help. You don’t have to be strong every single moment. Listen to your body, speak up for yourself, lean on the people who love you, and never be afraid to ask questions or seek support. Remember that your journey is your own, and there is no right or wrong way to get through it. Celebrate the small victories, hold on to hope, and remind yourself that you are more than your diagnosis. You are NOT alone, and even on the hardest days, there is strength within you that you may not even realize you have. Take it one day, one treatment, and one step at a time.”

With love in her heart and hope for everyone struggling with breast cancer, Tonya Cordial continues to shine throughout our region. She is not only a breast cancer survivor but also a compassionate individual who spends her days helping others while refusing to let cancer define her life.

If you or someone you know feels unwell or suspects that something may not be right with your body, seeking medical attention is important. Early detection of breast cancer can improve treatment options and outcomes. Regular screenings and prompt evaluation of unusual changes can help identify potential problems and allow patients and their medical teams to make informed decisions about treatment.

Support is available even when you feel alone. Our region has a strong network for breast cancer survivors, including medical teams, fellow survivors, churches, and community outreach programs. Unity and connection can strengthen individuals throughout their journeys, help them navigate treatment, and bring like-minded people together in the spirit of hope and love.

Tonya Cordial has found light in some of the darkest places. Through her story, she serves as a shining example of the strength that can come from love, the importance of community, and the hope that can carry someone through life's most difficult challenges.
