How Shoes – 4 - Kids is Giving Hope

to Underprivileged Children

In a world where a simple pair of shoes can mean the difference between confidence and shame, Shoes 4 Kids is stepping up—literally and figuratively—to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged children. This powerful non-profit organization is transforming communities by tackling one of the most visible signs of poverty: the lack of proper footwear.

Shoes 4 Kids provides brand new, name-brand athletic shoes to children in need, working directly with local school systems to identify those who could benefit most. The organization is entirely fueled by generosity, with all funds raised through community-driven events, donations from businesses, clubs, and kind-hearted individuals. It's more than just shoes—it's dignity, opportunity, and hope.

Dorothy Spillman, a dedicated volunteer with Shoes 4 Kids, has seen firsthand the impact this program has on young lives. “It’s never over if we aren’t putting shoes on the children—we are raising money to buy more shoes with,” she shared, highlighting the ongoing mission and unwavering commitment of the team.

“My favorite part about being part of this program is getting to see the smile on the children’s faces and that sparkle in their eyes. It truly makes it all worthwhile,” Spillman added. And it's not hard to see why. That sparkle represents more than just excitement; it’s a sign of restored self-esteem and the joy of simply being seen and cared for.

Now entering its fourth year, the Shoes 4 Kids program continues to expand its reach. “Last year we donated over 800 pairs of shoes,” Spillman said. “This year we have branched out into Carter County and will also branch out into Lawrence County. So, we anticipate that once we do, we will be at around 1,200 pairs of shoes for this year.”

Those numbers are more than statistics—they represent children whose lives have been made a little brighter, a little easier. For some kids, a new pair of athletic shoes can mean better participation in gym class, more confidence walking into school, or simply the joy of owning something new.

“It is such an honor to be a part of this group and to have the opportunity to help these children. It really is a blessing for all involved,” Spillman said. Her words reflect a sentiment shared by many who have joined the movement.

Community support continues to pour in. Recently, Tina Rice from the Ladies Auxiliary AMVETS Post 95 in Greenup County, Kentucky, presented a generous donation to the Shoes 4 Kids program, reinforcing the strong local commitment to making a difference.

And the opportunities to get involved aren’t slowing down anytime soon. The 4th Annual Shoes 4 Kids Golf Scramble is set to tee off on Saturday, July 19, at River Bend Golf Course on Route 1 in Greenup. The event promises to be a fun and impactful day, with all proceeds helping to put more shoes on children’s feet.

For those wanting to make a difference right now, Spillman says donating is easier than ever. “You can go to Facebook Shoes 4 Kids and make a donation. We have a Venmo account set up,” she shared. Every dollar goes directly toward purchasing shoes for kids who need them most.

In a world full of challenges, Shoes 4 Kids offers a simple but powerful reminder: when we come together, we can walk alongside those in need—and help them take their next step with pride. Will you be a part of the journey?
