Dreams Taking Flight
By: Greenup County Schools

Recently, Greenup County Schools had a unique visitor who gave students an unforgettable lesson on the power of technology and drones. Staff Sergeant Roderic Liggens, a professional drone pilot, took time out of his busy schedule to show students just how cool—and important—drone technology can be. From beginner models to advanced equipment used by professionals, the students were completely captivated as they learned from someone who trains military and police personnel all over the world. It was a hands-on experience that truly had students buzzing with excitement!
In the civilian world, Mister Liggens is a professional drone pilot who trains military and police personnel on drone operations. “He travels across the country and overseas to teach people—but today, his students were our very own Musketeers! Needless to say, our students had a blast learning from Mister Liggens,” Greenup County Schools shared on their Facebook page.
First, we thought you might enjoy learning how a Colorado native who’s traveled the world ended up calling Greenup County “home.” Mister Liggens spent over a decade in the Marine Corps, specializing in drone operations. After eight deployments—five of them combat deployments—Liggens and his wife decided they wanted to settle down somewhere with some land and a quieter lifestyle. After searching all over the country, they found their dream farm right here in Greenup County. Liggens says his family feels right at home here and they absolutely love their life in the county.
When Greenup County Schools asked, “What’s your honest opinion of Greenup County?” Liggens immediately replied, “I miss it every time I leave.” Here’s a little more of what he had to say… “This place takes me back home... to the way values should be. It makes me want to help out in any way I can because all you see from everyone here is a helping hand. When I was living in the city, we were all close together, yet you didn’t even know your neighbor. Here, I’m farther from my neighbors, but I have a great relationship with them.”
When asked if Greenup County is what he calls “home,” he didn’t hesitate: “Yes sir.” Liggens went on to say, “My kids and wife love it here… my wife grew up with horses, so she loves having the farm.” We should also mention that three of his children are students at Greenup County Schools. Now, back to today’s story…
Recently, Mister Liggens had the chance to visit some of the students at Greenup County Schools. The students smiled, gazed in awe, and listened intently as Mister Liggens taught them about different types of drones. He even gave them the chance to get hands-on with the equipment. The students had the chance to explore beginner drones they could get their hands on themselves, and they also got a look at the advanced drones used by professionals.
You’d be amazed at what these professional drones are capable of. A few lucky students volunteered to be “tracked.” They ran between vehicles and around buildings… but couldn’t outrun the drones following their every move. It was a jaw-dropping experience for the students, who realized just how powerful and fascinating this technology can be!
So, what was Liggens hoping that the students took away from his lesson? “I want them to think outside the box. If their minds are being sparked to think about different opportunities, then my whole purpose for coming here is complete. Even if it’s just adding another skill to their toolkit… I want them to know they have options. They’re thinking outside the box and wanting more,” Liggens shared.
Everyone at Greenup County Schools is incredibly grateful to Liggens for taking the time to visit the students. “Thank you, Mister Liggens, for visiting us today and giving our students such a memorable experience. Watching them learn from you was inspiring, and we look forward to seeing their dreams take flight,” Greenup County Schools said on their Facebook page.
