The Super Bowl

All of the NFL preseason hype has sailed, the season has been played, and the championship comes down to the final two teams standing, The Kansas City Chiefs and The Philadelphia Eagles. Although not everyone is a football fan, there is no escaping the hype in the media and everywhere you look that the Super Bowl is near.
Now, I must confess that I was not raised in a household where the Super Bowl was allowed to take over on Sunday. My brother and I always got the Super Bowl leftovers (however much of the game was left after Sunday evening church was over). There were, however, a few instances where snowy weather allowed us to see the whole game. I remember quite vividly the 1985 Super Bowl which featured the New England Patriots and the Chicago Bears. It was the first time I ever saw a whole Super Bowl game. My mom hung tissues with the team names on the rabbit ear antennas so that the fans of the losing team could use them.
In 1966 the National Football League and the American Football Leagues decided to have a championship game where their best teams would compete for a title. For the first few years the game was referred to as the NFL-AFL World Championship Game. In 1969 the name Super Bowl was created, and it has been the trademark game played each year. The trophy for the winning team is called the Vince Lombardi trophy. Lombardi was the coach for the Green Bay Packers, the team that won the first two Super Bowls.
There are 32 NFL teams, and they all strive to be the best in the business each year. Twenty of the thirty-two teams have won at least one Super Bowl. The only teams to never appear in the big game are the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, and Jacksonville Jaguars. Three of those four teams made runs in this year’s playoffs but again fell short of the mark.
Getting to the Super Bowl is only part of the battle. Once there you have to perform at your highest level to bring home the Lombardi Trophy. The only two teams to be undefeated in the Super Bowl are the Baltimore Ravens and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Other notable milestones of the game include the fact that the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots are tied for the most titles at six each. Tom Brady AKA “The GOAT” has the most NFL championships, which is a total of seven .
This year the Kansas City Chiefs are hoping to write a little history as well. If the Chiefs can win Super Bowl 59, they will be the first team to win three in a row. Standing between the Chiefs and the Lombardi trophy is Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles. The game will again be a star-studded event with big name halftime performances and of course the commercials that some people just love.
No matter the outcome, at the end of the game the confetti will fall, the Lombardi trophy will be awarded and no doubt some history will be written. However, the following day NFL fans will pick up the pieces, begin looking toward the NFL draft, preseason camps and the process begins all over for the quest to become the next Super Bowl champion.
