Why Summer Motion Is Eastern Kentucky’s Most Anticipated Festival of the Year

Every summer, just as the fireflies begin to dance and patriotic spirit fills the air, something truly spectacular ignites on the banks of the Ohio River in Ashland, Kentucky. The buzz isn’t just from the carnival rides or the sizzling funnel cakes—it's from thousands of people gathering for one of Eastern Kentucky’s most beloved and exhilarating summer celebrations: Summer Motion.
Now in its 36th year, Summer Motion is more than just a festival. It’s a vibrant tradition, a multi-day celebration of community, music, food, family, and freedom. It’s where laughter floats on the breeze, and the sounds of live music mingle with the oohs and aahs of dazzling fireworks. And if you’ve never been before, get ready: 2025 is shaping up to be the best year yet.
Summer Motion began in 1989, but its roots go back even further to the Tristate Fair & Regatta of 1977. That original event was a joint effort between Ashland, Kentucky; Ironton, Ohio; and Huntington, West Virginia to celebrate the Fourth of July with flair. Though the Tristate Fair eventually ran its course, the heart of the celebration lived on—and Summer Motion was born, building on that same spirit of unity and summer fun.
In its early days, Summer Motion split its time between Central Park and the riverfront, featuring craft shows, car shows, and live concerts. But as the festival grew in popularity, the logistics became a challenge.
“It was like running two festivals at the same time—moving everything was a huge challenge,” said Festival President Ruby Deerfield.
To streamline the experience and amplify the fun, organizers eventually consolidated everything at Ashland’s Riverport, along the banks of the Ohio River. That decision transformed the festival into what it is today: a single, high-energy, can’t-miss event that lights up the entire region.
Although the music lineup alone is enough to draw a crowd, Summer Motion is so much more than a concert series. It’s an all-ages celebration packed with activities that make every day an adventure:
A carnival filled with thrilling rides and nostalgic games
Food vendors serving up both local favorites and fairground classics
Arts and crafts booths that showcase Appalachian heritage and creativity
Fireworks that paint the night sky in red, white, and blue
And most importantly—FREE admission to all performances!
Whether you're a lifelong local or just visiting Eastern Kentucky for the first time, Summer Motion makes sure everyone feels welcome. It’s this family-friendly, community-first spirit that sets the festival apart and keeps people coming back year after year.
Festival President Ruby Deerfield, who has been involved in Summer Motion for over three decades, puts it best:
“We all work hard, but it is wonderful to see the smiles on the faces of everyone enjoying free concerts, a fabulous fireworks show on July 4th, great festival food vendors, the carnival, and more. Summer Motion provides a positive economic impact, tourism, and improved quality of life for our area.”
