For high school students, working toward graduation requires dedication, perseverance, and hard work. Balancing academic responsibilities while still enjoying the experiences of adolescence can be challenging. Many students closely monitor their grade point averages, striving to earn the distinction of valedictorian or salutatorian. Others enroll in dual-credit or college-level courses to gain a head start on their higher education journey.

For Michael “Dillon” Mills, all of these achievements became a reality. Dillon is a proud graduate of Holy Family High School and the Valedictorian of the Class of 2026. His accomplishments extend far beyond the traditional expectations of a high school student. While many graduates leave high school with a few college credits, Dillon accumulated enough credits to earn an Associate in Arts degree from Ashland Community and Technical College before beginning his full-time university studies. In addition, he earned a Certificate in Appalachian Studies, demonstrating both academic excellence and a commitment to understanding the culture and history of his region.

As if those accomplishments were not impressive enough, Dillon balanced his rigorous academic schedule while working part-time at East Carter Memory Gardens. His dedication to academics, leadership, and community involvement earned him recognition as a member of the National Honor Society, further highlighting his commitment to excellence.

Dillon attended Holy Family High School for the past six years and made many lasting memories during his time there. When reflecting on his favorite experiences, he recalled a memorable day near the end of his eighth-grade year.

“We didn’t have any work to do,” Dillon said. “Everything was already finished, so we got to spend hours outside. It was fun just being a part of that day.”

Throughout his years at Holy Family, Dillon remained actively involved in extracurricular activities. He participated in archery, competed as a member of the golf team, and developed leadership skills that would serve him well in the future. His commitment to service and leadership eventually led him to become Student Body President at Ashland Community and Technical College, a significant accomplishment that reflected the respect he earned from both his peers and faculty members.

Managing such a demanding schedule was not always easy. Like many students, Dillon faced challenges in maintaining motivation while balancing coursework, extracurricular activities, work responsibilities, and leadership roles. Certain periods of the school year proved particularly difficult.

“The third quarter was always the roughest,” Dillon admitted. “Especially during COVID.”

Despite these challenges, Dillon remained focused on his goals and consistently pushed himself to succeed. His determination and resilience allowed him to excel academically while continuing to pursue his broader ambitions.

This fall, Dillon plans to attend Morehead State University, where he will pursue a bachelor’s degree with a focus on history and humanities. Looking ahead, he hopes to build a career in politics and become a catalyst for positive change throughout Appalachia.

“That’s one of the biggest driving factors behind my education,” Dillon explained. “I want to help influence corporations so that Appalachian culture is better understood and appreciated. I want to encourage meaningful change.”

With his proven dedication, leadership, and passion for serving others, there is little doubt that Michael Dillon Mills has a bright future ahead.
