Summer Motion Celebrates America 250

The Ashland Beacon

Every summer, the banks of the Ohio River come alive with the sounds of music, laughter and celebration as thousands gather for one of the Tri-State's most anticipated traditions. Summer Motion returns to the Ashland Riverfront July 1-4, bringing four days of free concerts, family entertainment, carnival rides, food vendors and one of the region's largest Independence Day fireworks displays.

The annual festival has become synonymous with the Fourth of July in Ashland, offering something for every member of the family while celebrating America's 250th anniversary in 2026.

The festival's roots stretch back nearly 50 years. Summer Motion traces its history to the 1977 Tri-State Fair & Regatta, a cooperative celebration between Ashland, Ironton and Huntington. After that event came to an end, Summer Motion was established in 1989. Originally held in Central Park with craft shows, car shows and bandstand concerts before moving to the riverfront for evening entertainment, the festival has grown into the signature summer event it is today.

Festival Opens July 1

The festivities officially begin Wednesday, July 1, as the carnival opens at 5 p.m. on the Ashland Riverfront, giving families an opportunity to enjoy rides and games before the full schedule of entertainment begins.

Tribute Bands Kick Off Concert Series

Activities expand on Thursday, July 2, when the gates open at 4 p.m. with food vendors, specialty booths and children's activities joining the carnival.

That evening's free concert lineup celebrates classic pop and disco music. At 7:30 p.m., Let's Hang On – A Frankie Valli Tribute takes the stage, recreating the timeless harmonies and chart-topping hits made famous by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. The nationally touring tribute act performs favorites such as "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Can't Take My Eyes Off You."

At 9 p.m., The New York Bee Gees continue the evening with a high-energy salute to one of the world's most successful pop groups. Known for faithfully recreating the music of the Bee Gees, the band performs disco classics including "Stayin' Alive," "Night Fever," "You Should Be Dancing" and many more.

Contemporary Christian Music Headlines Friday

Friday, July 3, shifts the focus to contemporary Christian music. Gates again open at 4 p.m. with vendors, children's activities and the carnival.

The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with Worship Collective, bringing together musicians and worship leaders for an uplifting evening of praise and worship music.

At 8 p.m., Micah Tyler takes the stage. The Dove Award-nominated singer-songwriter has become one of Christian music's most recognizable voices with inspirational hits including "Different," "Even Then" and "I See Grace." Tyler's music combines heartfelt storytelling with messages of hope and faith.

Closing the evening at 9:30 p.m. is multiple Dove Award winner Matthew West, one of Christian music's most accomplished artists and songwriters. Known for chart-topping songs such as "Hello, My Name Is," "Broken Things" and "Truth Be Told," West has built a reputation for encouraging audiences through relatable stories and uplifting music.

Independence Day Celebration Caps Festival

Saturday, July 4, offers a full day of activities beginning at 8 a.m. with the annual Summer Motion 10K Run and 5K Run/Walk. Organized by O Such Tri-State Race Planners, the races begin at Park Place at 17th Street and Central Avenue. Participants receive race shirts, and pizza will be served following the race. Awards will be presented to the top overall finishers and age-group winners.

The celebration continues at 1 p.m. with the Winter Wonderland Presents America 250 Parade, following the traditional Ashland Christmas Parade route through downtown.

Riverfront gates open at 4 p.m., and the first 3,000 attendees will receive a commemorative American flag in honor of America's 250th anniversary. Food vendors, specialty booths, children's activities and the carnival will once again be available throughout the evening.

Musical entertainment begins at 6 p.m. with local performer Spencer Hatcher before Nuthin' Fancy, a tribute to Southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd, takes the stage at 7 p.m. The band is known for faithfully recreating the iconic sound of classics like "Sweet Home Alabama," "Simple Man" and "Free Bird."

At 8 p.m., Summer Motion pauses for a special Patriotic Program honoring all branches of the United States military. The ceremony is designed to recognize the service and sacrifice of the nation's military members while celebrating America's 250th birthday.

Country music legends The Gatlin Brothers headline the festival at 9 p.m. Larry, Steve and Rudy Gatlin have entertained audiences for decades with their unmistakable harmonies and numerous hits, including "All the Gold in California," "Houston (Means I'm One Day Closer to You)," "Broken Lady" and "Night Time Magic." Their blend of traditional country, gospel and pop has earned them Grammy Awards and a lasting place in country music history.

The festival concludes at 10:15 p.m. with what organizers describe as the largest fireworks show in the Tri-State area, lighting up the skies above the Ohio River in celebration of Independence Day.

Planning Your Visit

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, strollers and service animals to enjoy the festivities comfortably. For the safety of all attendees, bags and packages are subject to search.

Coolers, alcohol, pets and tents or shade canopies are not permitted inside the festival grounds.

With free entertainment, nationally recognized performers, family-friendly attractions and a spectacular fireworks finale, Summer Motion once again promises to be the centerpiece of the Tri-State's Independence Day celebration, continuing a tradition that has brought families together on the Ashland riverfront for generations.
