A yearly tradition continues in Cannonsburg this weekend on October 10 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. as New Beginning Church of the Nazarene hosts their annual community day. A day of fellowship and community outreach, attendees can get their flu shot, meet a Nigerian Dwarf goat and have a delicious meal all in one day.
“We had our homecoming this past weekend, and I got to tell you, when I came into this church, one of the things that attracted me was the warmth, the love that I felt coming in,” commented Rachel Cooper, who serves as the outreach coordinator for the district as well as is president of Marcia Missions, about her first time at New Beginnings Church of the Nazarene. “They invited me to sit with them, not find my own place to sit, but to sit with them.”
Cooper has been critically involved in planning this year’s community day and is just one of over 20 missions the church is involved in. In honor of Marcia Wilks, longtime teacher and missionary of the church, Cooper heads the Marcia Missions program, which seeks to support and provide fellowship to the local area.
“I like to think it's a time when we, as a church, can come together with the community, like share a meal, enjoy all the fun activities, get to know one another, get reacquainted, and [build] new relationships. It's also another opportunity for us as a church to show the love of Christ to one another,” explained Cooper about Community Day.
On the heels of the church’s 50-year anniversary, participants can find over 50 years of history and kindness at this year’s event which will offer flu shots (the quadrivalent dose for those 65 and younger) courtesy of Kings Daughters Medical Center, a delicious meal of smoked meats by Ben Tibbetts, live gospel singing and face painting by Russell High School senior Zailey Hayes. Members of the Big Sky Farm Schoolhouse will also host a petting zoo, bringing their chickens, a Flemish giant rabbit and Dolly, a Nigerian dwarf goat.
Inflatables will also be available for the children, and participants are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and stay awhile. The Royster family will also be making their famous apple butter and will be giving away jars while supplies lasts. First Responders will also be onsite to answer questions and talk about their roles and equipment thanks to the Boyd County Sheriff’s Department, EMS and Fire Department.
“We just want them to know that we're there for them, that they can find their hope, love, and comfort within our church, and maybe somebody is looking for a home church. [Then] we offer for them to join us, come sit with us, and we'll share information about the church and the services. Because you know we have that desire to serve as the hands of feet of Jesus and to show love and service to lift them up,” detailed Cooper.
Community day is sure to offer something for everyone and remind us of just how strong our community ties are in this region.
