Boyd County’s Repair Affair 2025 A Day of Smiles for Miles

Boyd County’s Repair Affair 2025

A Day of Smiles for Miles

As the crisp air of autumn approaches and golden leaves begin to fall, it’s time once again for one of Boyd County’s most meaningful and community-driven events: Repair Affair 2025. This isn’t just any volunteer effort—it’s a celebration of kindness, connection, and compassion. For those looking to make a real difference in someone’s life, this is your chance!

Every year, Kentucky weather takes its toll on local homes. From leaky roofs and damaged gutters to cluttered driveways and fallen limbs, the remnants of spring and summer storms are often too much for some homeowners to handle on their own. That’s where the Boyd County Community Development and Boyd County Code Enforcement step in, offering an annual opportunity for the community to come together and help residents prepare their homes—and their lives—for the colder months ahead.

Repair Affair is about more than just fixing structures; it’s about building relationships. Whether it’s clearing debris, repainting a porch, repairing steps, or tidying up a yard, every task is a chance to restore not just a property, but a sense of safety and pride. Many of the individuals helped through this initiative are older adults or people living with disabilities—neighbors who may not be able to climb ladders or haul heavy debris on their own. Volunteers make it possible for them to maintain a safe and comfortable home.

Cooler fall temperatures make for a perfect workday environment, and there’s something special about that crisp breeze and the sound of laughter and conversation echoing from yard to yard. As one organizer put it, “An enjoyable cool autumn breeze and smiling eager volunteers await the day.”

Repair Affair 2025 is set for Saturday, September 27, and volunteers are encouraged to come prepared for a full, rewarding day of service. That means wearing comfortable clothing and sturdy footwear, and bringing along gloves, safety glasses, a raincoat, and even a hat. Snacks, drinks, and perhaps a change of clothes are also recommended—after all, it’s hard to stay clean while clearing brush or applying a fresh coat of paint.

Volunteer registration is required and is now open through the Boyd County website at boydcountyky.gov/repairaffair.com.  Applications will be accepted from July 1 through July 31, 2025. The earlier you sign up, the easier it is for event coordinators to plan and assign teams where they’re needed most.

In addition to recruiting volunteers, Repair Affair is currently accepting project applications from community members in need of assistance. To qualify, applicants must own or reside in the home, be at least 60 years old or have a certified disability, and live within the unincorporated area of Boyd County. Eligible repairs include wheelchair ramp installations, handrail and step repairs, deck and porch maintenance, exterior painting, and general yard clean-up. These applications can also be found on the Repair Affair webpage.

For more information, or if you have any questions, reach out to Kacy Abrams at 606.547.2067 or via email at kabrams@boydcountyky.gov.

In a world where it’s easy to feel disconnected, Repair Affair reminds us of the power of neighbors helping neighbors. It’s a single day of service—but its impact lasts far longer. It’s about showing up, lending a hand, and being the reason someone feels supported and seen. So, grab your tools, bring your smile, and join us in turning good intentions into great results.

Repair Affair 2025 is more than a repair project—it’s a day of smiles for miles!
