Imel’s Greenhouse, located at 2836 KY-1, Greenup Kentucky, is well known for its extensive selection of plants, charming outdoor décor, and the annual Farm to Table dinner, is buzzing with excitement over its latest venture. The greenhouse, owned by Kenny Imel, has teamed up with local beekeeper Eric Hilton on an initiative they’ve dubbed “The Bee Project.” So, what exactly is “The Bee Project?” It’s an ambitious endeavor where Imel and Hilton are cultivating their own honey right on their property. What started as a simple experiment has seemingly blossomed into a successful and fruitful project.
Imel explained that when they began this project, they started small with just ten hives just gauge how things would go. He was happy to report that since the project’s conception things have gone really well.
Hilton, who has a long history with beekeeping, added, “This project has exceeded our expectations. We’ve harvested a significant amount of honey this year. We opted for ten hives as a manageable starting point, and this fall will mark my third harvest from these hives.”
Growing up Hilton remembers both is uncle and great uncle always being involved in bee keeping. “At one point I remember him having around 100 hives.” Recalled Hilton. “After he passed away, I inherited some of his equipment and started my own beekeeping journey.”
Honey has been cherished for its natural sweetness and therapeutic properties for centuries. Imel pointed out that when produced from your own garden, homegrown honey offers a range of health benefits, often surpassing those of store-bought varieties. The flowers from which bees collect nectar play an important role in determining the honey’s flavor, color, and, most importantly, its health benefits.
Choosing the right flowers for your garden can significantly influence the health benefits of your honey. A diverse selection of flowering plants ensures a varied nectar source for bees, enhancing the overall nutritional profile of the honey. Planting a mix of herbs, wildflowers, and fruit trees provides a continuous nectar supply, which can lead to honey with a richer flavor and a broader range of health benefits. One of the flowering plants that is paramount to “The Bee Project,” is buckwheat. The two (Imel and Hilton) shared that buckwheat honey, known for its dark color and robust flavor, is especially rich in antioxidants and has strong anti-inflammatory properties.
Many people are unaware of the amazing health benefits that buckwheat honey offers. Buckwheat honey is renowned for its unique health benefits, which stem from the specific features of the buckwheat plant and the honey it produces. Here are just a few of the notable health benefits that honey derived from buckwheat offers …
High Antioxidant Content
Buckwheat honey is known for its high levels of antioxidants, which are compounds that help neutralize free radicals in the body. Antioxidants are essential for reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, which can contribute to chronic diseases and aging. The dark color of buckwheat honey often indicates a higher antioxidant concentration compared to lighter honeys.
Anti-Inflammatory Properties
The antioxidants in buckwheat honey also contribute to its anti-inflammatory effects. Consuming this honey can help reduce inflammation in the body, which is beneficial for conditions such as arthritis and other inflammatory disorders.
Support for Immune Health
Buckwheat honey has natural antimicrobial properties that can support immune health. It can help the body fight off infections and improve overall immune function. The honey's antibacterial properties make it useful in soothing sore throats and potentially aiding in the prevention of upper respiratory infections.
Wound Healing
Due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, buckwheat honey can be effective in wound care. It promotes faster healing of minor cuts, burns, and abrasions. Applying the honey topically can create a moist wound environment that supports healing and reduces the risk of infection.
Digestive Health
Buckwheat honey contains prebiotics, which are beneficial for gut health. These prebiotics support the growth of healthy gut bacteria, aiding in digestion and improving nutrient absorption. It can also help alleviate gastrointestinal issues such as ulcers and gastritis.
Soothing Effects
Buckwheat honey is often used as a remedy for coughs and sore throats. Its thick consistency provides a soothing coating that can help alleviate throat irritation and reduce coughing. This can be especially comforting during cold and flu season.
Energy Boost
Like other honeys, buckwheat honey is a natural source of simple sugars, including glucose fructose, which provide a quick and sustained energy boost. It can be a healthier alternative to processed sugars and energy drinks, offering a more natural source of energy.
Skin Health
Buckwheat honey’s antimicrobial and moisturizing properties make it beneficial for skin health. It can be used in face masks or applied directly to the skin to help with acne, dryness, and other skin conditions. Its ability to retain moisture and promote healing supports overall skin health.
