Get ready for a delightful community celebration as Greenup, Kentucky, gears up for the highly anticipated Greenup Old Fashion Days (GOFD), taking place on Oct. 3, 4, and 5. This annual festival has become a cherished tradition for locals and visitors alike, offering an exciting array of activities designed for family enjoyment, including live entertainment, a children’s inflatable area, train rides, diverse vendors, and mouthwatering food options.
Since its inception in 1965, Greenup Old Fashion Days has transformed the town into a vibrant hub of activity, attracting crowds eager to immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere. The festival is something that people both young and old look forward to every year. Attendees can expect an eclectic mix of festival-style foods, live performances by local talent, and a showcase of various vendors offering unique crafts and goods.
Anne Stephens, co-chair of the event along with Bambi Reed, is particularly excited about this year’s festivities. “We have an amazing lineup planned for 2024, which marks the 57th year for Old Fashion Days,” she shared. “My role involves booking entertainment and serving as the organizational administrator, while Bambi coordinates countless details along with her daughter, Cassie Whitaker.”
This year, Stephens and Reed have been honored as the Grand Marshal team for 2024. “It’s such an honor to serve as Grand Marshal with my friend Bambi,” Stephens expressed. “We make a great team and have dedicated ourselves to carrying on the traditions that Mattie Coldiron established before her passing in 2021. She is truly missed.”
One of the highlights of Greenup Old Fashion Days is the sense of community it fosters. The event brings people together from all walks of life, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. “I am excited to see downtown Greenup full of people visiting, shopping, eating, and listening to live music,” Stephens added. “This festival is about community, and it really shows the spirit of togetherness that makes Greenup so special.”
Greenup itself is a historical gem, laid out between 1803 and 1804 by pioneer Robert Johnson. Initially named Greenupsburg, it served as the seat of government for Greenup County, formally established in 1818. The name was later shortened to Greenup in 1872 to avoid confusion with Greensburg. Over the years, the town has faced challenges, including the devastating Ohio River Flood of 1937, but has continued to thrive and grow.
“I wish more people knew what a wonderful little river town Greenup truly is,” Stephens reflected. “What makes Greenup unique is the absence of flood walls or barriers along the river. You can simply walk behind the courthouse, and you are right on the riverbank. The historic courthouse and downtown buildings have so many stories to tell, and we want people to experience the beauty and friendliness of our town during Old Fashion Days.”
As the festival dates approach, excitement is building for what promises to be an unforgettable experience. Over three days, downtown Greenup is transformed into a bustling festival ground, with streets lined with vendors offering an array of delicious food – from classic festival fare to local delicacies. Local bands will provide musical entertainment throughout the evenings, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Children will have plenty of opportunities for fun in a safe environment, with activities like inflatable play areas and train rides designed to keep them entertained. The festival also features a variety of engaging events, including a talent show, baby pageant, costume contest, and more, ensuring that there is something for everyone in the family to enjoy.
