When you hear the name Sue Dowdy, one of the first words that may come to mind is “dedication.” Dowdy’s hard work and love for her community have truly made our beautiful city a better place in this world. After decades of serving Ashland in a variety of roles, Dowdy, now 73, is retiring as the Director of the Ashland Senior Center, but her impact on the city will be felt for years to come.

Dowdy has been a beloved figure in the Ashland area for as long as many can remember. From her early career at Ashland Oil to her leadership in local events like Summer Motion and Poage Landing Days, Dowdy has given selflessly to the city she calls home. Dowdy also served on on the Paramount Arts Center board for 20 years and chaired the fundraiser for the grand re-opening of PAC with the Judds. Her remarkable journey is a testament to her unwavering commitment to making Ashland a beautiful, thriving community. "I’ve had so many wonderful memories over the years working at the Ashland Senior Center," Dowdy shared. "I’ve been blessed to work with amazing people—volunteers, staff, and the seniors themselves—who have made every moment special."

Her impact on Ashland has not gone unnoticed by those who have worked alongside her. Rebecca Nicely, a former colleague, shared her admiration. “Sue is incredibly caring and compassionate. Whenever the seniors needed anything, she took it to heart and worked tirelessly to help meet their needs. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to work with her. She’s a wonderful person."

Dowdy’s legacy stretches far beyond her role at the Senior Center. She served as the Tourism Director for Ashland for 18 years, promoting the city to visitors and always striving to make Ashland a welcoming place for everyone. Additionally, Dowdy dedicated more than two decades of service to the Highlands Museum and Discovery Board, constantly working to enhance the cultural fabric of the area. "I’ve always loved helping others and interacting with people. Growing up, I worked hard and made sure to do my best in everything I did. My time at Ashland Oil taught me the value of dedication and service, and it was an honor to work with so many talented people," she explained.

A proud alumna of Ashland Community College, Dowdy’s career began at Ashland Oil, where she worked until 2000. From there, she went on to serve as an aide for Democratic Rep. Ken Lucas, who represented District 4. It was in these early years that Dowdy’s leadership potential became evident, and she continued to build a career marked by service to her community.

One of Dowdy’s more notable achievements was her role as Co-Chair of Winter Wonderland of Lights for 11 years, a beloved annual event that has become a hallmark of Ashland’s holiday season. Her ability to bring people together and passion for creating memorable experiences for families is just one example of her tireless dedication.

Despite stepping down from her position at the Senior Center, Dowdy plans to stay involved in the community. She currently sells ads for The Greater Ashland Beacon and intends to continue this work after her retirement. But for the first time in years, Dowdy is looking forward to a little more rest. "I’m excited to finally be able to sleep in, take naps, and do things on my own time," she said with a smile. "It’s going to be such a blessing."

Although her daily routine will change, Dowdy’s deep connection to Ashland and its people will never waver. She expressed her gratitude to the countless individuals who have supported her throughout her career. "I've loved everyone I’ve worked with. God blessed me with good people, and if you don’t surround yourself with great people, you’ll never succeed.”

MaryAnn York, another longtime colleague, shared "Sue was an amazing boss during our years working together at Ashland Tourism. Her commitment to Ashland’s betterment was always her top priority. She always thought about what would make Ashland more welcoming to visitors, and her attention to detail was unmatched. There will only be one Sue Dowdy."

Sue Dowdy’s retirement will be celebrated with a special party on December 20 at 11:30 a.m. at the Ashland Senior Center. It’s an opportunity for everyone in the community to express thanks to a woman who has done so much for Ashland.

As Dowdy takes these next steps to embark on this journey to turn the pages of this new chapter in her life, she leaves behind a city that is better for her many contributions over the years. Ashland is undoubtedly a better place because of her tireless efforts and deep love for the people who call it home. Her legacy will live on in every event, every initiative, and every life she touched throughout her remarkable career.

"I’ve been blessed," Dowdy said. "I’m thankful for the opportunity to serve my community, and I know that Ashland will continue to thrive because it’s full of great people. Thank you to everyone I have ever worked with over the years. I have truly been blessed.”
