A celebration years in the making unfolded recently for Jaycie Goad as the Boyd County softball superstar became the first player in program history to have her jersey officially retired — a once-in-a-generation honor that cements her place among the greatest athletes ever to wear a Lady Lions uniform.
What made the unforgettable moment even more emotional was the fact that Goad had absolutely no idea the ceremony was meant for her.
Friends, family, teammates, coaches, and supporters gathered as Goad believed she was attending a special unveiling for one of the program’s assistant coaches. But when the ribbon was finally cut, the surprise instantly became one of the most memorable moments in Boyd County athletics history. Hanging proudly for everyone to see was a banner featuring Goad’s name and iconic No. 11 jersey.
The emotional reveal left the crowd roaring with applause as one of the most accomplished players to ever step onto the diamond received the ultimate tribute from the program she helped elevate to new heights.
For Boyd County softball, this was far more than a ceremony. It was the celebration of a player whose dominance, leadership, and passion transformed the program and inspired an entire community.
During her legendary career, Goad rewrote the record books and established herself as one of the most feared hitters in the state of Kentucky. Her accomplishments are nothing short of extraordinary, as she leaves Boyd County holding multiple school records, including:
• All-Time Career Home Run Leader
• Single-Season Home Run Leader
• RBI Leader
• Runs Scored Leader
• Hits Leader
• Doubles Leader
Every swing of the bat, every clutch hit, and every moment under pressure helped build a legacy that may stand for generations. Whether delivering towering home runs or sparking the offense with timely hits, Goad consistently gave Lady Lions fans moments they will never forget. Her impact, however, extended far beyond statistics.
Coaches and teammates have long praised Goad not only for her incredible talent, but for the work ethic, determination, and leadership she brought to the field every single day. Her commitment to the program helped establish a winning culture and raised the standard for future generations of Boyd County softball players.
“I am beyond humbled to be recognized by this program,” Goad said. “I am so thankful for my coaches, teammates, and parents who have been by my side through it all. I have given Boyd County softball everything I have over the last 6 years and I am greatly honored to have my jersey retired.”
The praise for Goad continued from those who have watched her journey from the very beginning.
“I have had the privilege of being around Jaycie the last ten years or so and getting to watch her grow and develop into the player and person that you don’t come across often. She is a perfect mix of talent, in game smarts, and the drive and determination to get her anywhere she wants to go. It has been a pleasure getting a front row seat to watch her play the last three years, “said Boyd County softball Coach Lance Seasor.
As the banner now hangs proudly as a permanent fixture of the Lady Lions program, it serves as a reminder of excellence, dedication, and history.
For Boyd County softball, retiring Goad’s jersey was not simply about honoring records or championships. It was about celebrating a player who forever changed the program and whose name will always be synonymous with greatness.
