Lady Lions Come Up Just Shy of State Final Four

QUARTERFINALS

 

NORTH LAUREL 5 BOYD COUNTY 4

 

Boyd County was one inning away from continuing the Lions magical run in the state tournament.

 

Leading North Laurel 4-0 going into the top of the seventh, Boyd County surrendered five runs in the visiting half of the inning and fell, 5-4. Elyn Simpkins worked 6 2/3 innings while allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out four.

 

Jaycie Goad led the Lions, going 3 for 3 with a double and RBI and was named to the State All-Tournament team. Kyli Kouns added an RBI double and Grace Stephens drove in a run on her lone hit.

 

The young Boyd County closes its season at 23-18 and returns most of their starters next season.



 

OPENING ROUND

 

BOYD COUNTY 2 MERCY (LOUISVILLE) 1

 

Boyd County needed a spark with the season on the line when the Lions entered the top of the seventh trailing 1-0.

 

Jaycie Goad delivered that spark with one swing of the bat with a two-run shot that ultimately lifted the Lions to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory over Louisville Mercy. Kyli Kouns added a double in the win. Jadyn Goad and Elise Sparks added singles.

 

Elyn Simpkins worked a complete game effort for the victory. Simpkins allowed one run on five hits and struck out six.
