The leaves are slowing beginning to fall as we usher in a new season. With fall approaching quickly we find ourselves in a whirlwind of back-to-back holidays. This is the time of year that many look forward to because with it comes precious moments spent with our loved ones. But for many of us, this time of year can be extremely stressful and can make us wish they would quickly pass. But the current state of the world and the tragedy we’ve seen in the past several weeks can help us develop an appreciation for the hard work, dedication, and kindness frequently demonstrated in our counties. This is especially true when events are thrown by our community leaders and health care advocates to give us a clean, family-friendly environment to celebrate the holidays we love and make the world feel somewhat normal for a moment.
It used to be an exciting part of the holidays to visit one's family, friends, and neighbors to celebrate and show kindness and appreciation for each other. In a year marked by global events that have tested our resilience and compassion, the importance of community support and gatherings cannot be overstated.
We in Boyd County will have the perfect opportunity next week to visit our neighbors in Greenup County and help support their efforts to care for their citizens.
On Thursday, Oct. 17 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m., the Greenup County Health Department, with the help of the Diabetes Coalition, will throw their annual Halloween “Monster Bash.” Small businesses and local vendors will be there early to set up their booths, but not before 2:30 p.m. This event promises to offer families a fun-filled environment to engage with their neighbors while raising awareness for a crucial health issue. Brandi Roe, Lead Diabetes Coordinator and Greenup County Health Department Nurse runs the Diabetes Coalition with Co-coordinator, Angela Kinney.
“We hope to educate the community on managing diabetes while enjoying the festivities, promote healthy lifestyle choices, and provide support and resources to those affected by diabetes.”
According to statistics, Diabetes affects one out of every 10 people, which means most of us have a family member or know someone who struggles with this disease.
This Monster Bash has become a Greenup County tradition and is a great way to bring the community together for a fun-filled evening of learning, games and supporting local small businesses. Each of the 40+ vendors will give out candy and snacks to kids and will share their business information with the community.
The vendors will be set up along the walking path that surrounds the Greenup County Health department building and parking lot. The Diabetes Coalition hopes to promote physical activity and encourage the community to use the free resources provided by the Health Department. There will be a costume contest, lots of games and prizes and more. This year, for the first time, there will be a hayride, and a dance floor set up. Even the vendors will be able to partake in the fun as there will be a booth decorating contest, giving them the chance to showcase their creativity while engaging with attendees, further strengthening community ties. This blend of fun, education, and local support is what makes Monster Bash a highlight of the year. In a time when the world can often feel chaotic and overwhelming, events like Monster Bash remind us of the power of community and the importance of supporting one another. As we gather to celebrate, let us take a moment to appreciate the hard work and dedication of our community leaders and health advocates. Their efforts create safe spaces for families to come together, share experiences, and foster friendships.
The past weeks have shown us the fragility of our circumstances, but events like this illustrate the strength that lies in unity, compassion, and support for one another. As we gear up for the holiday season, let us embrace the chance to come together in celebration.
So, mark your calendars and prepare your costumes! Join your neighbors at the Greenup County Health Department on Oct. 17 for a night filled with laughter, learning, and community spirit. Together, we can create lasting memories while raising awareness for a cause that affects so many. Let’s come together, support our local businesses, and make this Halloween a celebration of unity and kindness. After all, it’s in these moments that we find solace and strength, reminding us what it truly means to belong to a community.
