Downtown Ashland has a new gem for antique lovers and restoration enthusiasts. Brass Masters, a specialty store focusing on the restoration of brass, copper, and silver items, recently opened its doors at 240 16th Street. The store, helmed by Bo Keen and his wife Patricia, is quickly becoming a must-visit destination for those passionate about preserving history and appreciating craftsmanship.

Brass Masters offers a unique blend of services and products. The store specializes in the meticulous art of antique restoration, including polishing and repairing brass, copper, and aluminum, as well as rewiring and refurbishing old lamps and chandeliers. Keen, who previously worked at Brass Masters in Huntington, West Virginia, under the guidance of mentor Jim Hardman, brings a wealth of experience to his new venture.

"I began my journey in antique restoration working with Jim Hardman about thirty years ago," Keen explained. "Restoring antiques is more than just making them look new; it’s about connecting with their history and preserving their stories."

Restoring antiques, whether brass or silver, is more than just bringing items back to their former glory; it’s an enjoyable and deeply satisfying experience that combines historical appreciation, craftsmanship, and personal fulfillment. Restoring antiques lets you connect with history in a tangible way. Each piece carries a story from its past – whether it’s a brass candlestick that illuminated a Victorian parlor or a silver tea set that hosted elegant gatherings. As you work on these items, you become a steward of history, preserving the craftsmanship and stories they embody. This connection can be profoundly satisfying, providing a sense of continuity and a bridge to bygone eras.

Keen's dedication to antique restoration was ignited during his time with Hardman. "Hardman introduced me to the intricacies of polishing brass and restoring chandeliers. It's a process that requires both skill and passion," Keen said. After Hardman’s passing and changes in ownership, Keen seized the opportunity to revive Brass Masters and bring his vision to Ashland.” many people don't know that polishing brass is a thing." Keen shared.

The Keen’s store not only restores old treasures but also features a curated selection of antiques. Visitors can explore an ever-changing inventory of brass, copper, and silver items, each with its own story. From elegant chandeliers to vintage lamps, the store offers a chance to find unique pieces that reflect different eras of design and craftsmanship.

Brass Masters engages in sourcing antiques from a variety of locations, including estate sales, flea markets, and other antique shops. "We travel far and wide to find interesting and valuable items," Keen said. "You never know what you might discover."

One highlight of their restoration work journey includes a chandelier that was featured on the popular TV show “This Old House.” "Restoring that chandelier was a special project." Keen noted. "It’s a testament to the craftsmanship and quality that can be achieved with the right care."

Brass Masters is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on some Saturdays until 7 p.m. Keen and his wife Patricia are enthusiastic about the future and the role of Brass Masters in the revitalized downtown area. "We’re excited to be part of Ashland’s development and contribute to the vibrant community here."

For those interested in antique restoration, Brass Masters offers more than just services; it provides an opportunity to connect with history, develop new skills, and find satisfaction in preserving the past. Whether you're a seasoned collector or simply curious about the art of restoration, Brass Masters offers a gratifying and enriching experience. With new pieces arriving daily, the Keen’s encourages everyone to stop in often because you never know what treasures you might come across at Brass Masters.
