This past Saturday, something truly special bloomed in Ashland — Second Hand Rose celebrated its 50th anniversary with pride, joy, and a whole lot of vintage flair!

Since 1975, Second Hand Rose has been more than a shopping destination — it’s been a community cornerstone, a fashion treasure trove, and a heartwarming tale of local women, family legacy, and meaningful connections.

“Second Hand Rose has proudly been in business for 50 years. We opened our doors in 1975 and have been serving the Ashland community ever since,” said Matt Perkins, the proud owner of the beloved business. From its humble beginnings to a thriving trio of locations, the journey of Second Hand Rose is one for the (scrap)books.

What began as a vision among local women — including original founder Bea Slone Matthews — has blossomed into a family-run success story. “Second Hand Rose began when a group of Ashland women joined forces to sell their high-quality clothing on consignment. The Perkins family purchased the business from founder Bea Slone Matthews, and we’ve carried on her vision for five decades,” Perkins shared.

No longer just a single storefront, Second Hand Rose has grown and flourished into three unique locations across Ashland:

Clothing & Bridal/Formals Store

2284 Carter Avenue • 606.325.3287

Children’s Clothing Store

925 Winchester Avenue • 606.324.0350

Furniture & Home Décor Store

3205 Megan Neyer Way • 606.324.0387

“No, we’ve grown to three Ashland locations — clothing, kids, and furniture — all still locally owned and operated by our family,” said Perkins. It’s a true family affair — managed with love, dedication, and an eye for quality.

So, what keeps them going? “It’s humbling and inspiring. Our longevity reflects the loyalty of our customers and consignors,” Perkins stated. And it’s easy to see why people keep coming back. Beyond the savings and sustainability, Second Hand Rose is built on relationships. “The people. We’ve built lifelong friendships with customers and consignors, and every piece we sell has a story behind it,” explained Perkins.

Whether it’s a wedding dress finding a second walk down the aisle or a vintage coffee table getting a new lease on life, every item at Second Hand Rose has a past and a future — just waiting to be discovered.

Second Hand Rose isn’t just consignment… it is consignment with a purpose! More than a business, Second Hand Rose is a movement toward mindful, community-focused living. Perkins noted, “We’re more than just stores — we’re a part of Ashland’s story. Every item consigned and sold keeps money in the community, supports families, and reduces waste. Fun fact: over the years, we’ve sold items for more than 33,000 consignors from three states and counting!”

If you would like to consign, don’t fret because the entire process is quick and easy. Just head on over to one of the stores and find out how you can start consigning today. Here the days that the stores do intake...

As the golden anniversary party wrapped up this weekend, the message from Matt Perkins and the entire team was clear: Thank you.

“We’re incredibly grateful for five decades of support. Without our customers and consignors, Second Hand Rose wouldn’t exist. Thank you for letting us be part of your lives for 50 years — and here’s to the next 50!” Shared Perkins.

So, if you haven’t stopped by yet — or it’s been a while — there’s never been a better time to explore the charm, history, and community spirit of Second Hand Rose. Because sometimes, second-hand is the first place you should look.
