Self-Care Doesn’t Have to Be Fancy (Just Fun)

Life can get really busy. Between school, work, family, and everyday responsibilities, it's easy to forget to take care of the most important person—you! That’s why September is Self-Care Awareness Month, a time to remind ourselves that it’s okay (and necessary) to slow down and focus on our own well-being.

But self-care doesn’t have to mean fancy spa days, expensive vacations, or spending hours in deep meditation. It can be simple, fun, and totally your style. Whether you have five minutes or a whole afternoon, there’s always a way to fit a little self-care into your day.

What is self-care, really? Self-care is anything you do to take care of your mind, body, or spirit. It helps reduce stress, boost your mood, and improve your overall health. Some people think self-care is selfish—but that couldn’t be further from the truth! Taking care of yourself helps you stay strong and present for others, too.

And the best part? There’s no “right” way to do it. Everyone’s self-care routine is different. What matters most is that it makes you feel good.

Here are some lighthearted, low-stress ways to give yourself a little TLC during Self-Care Awareness Month (and beyond):

Read a book you love. Curling up with your favorite book, whether it’s a new fantasy series or a story you’ve read ten times, is a great way to escape and relax. Add a cozy blanket and a cup of tea, and you’ve got the perfect mini getaway.

Watch your favorite team play. Are you a sports fan? Grab some snacks, wear your team’s jersey, and enjoy a game on TV. It’s a fun way to unwind and get excited—just don’t stress too much if they lose!

Take a walk outside. Nature has a calming effect. Even a short 15-minute walk can clear your mind and boost your energy. Leave your phone at home, breathe deeply, and enjoy the fresh air.

Listen to music that makes you happy. Make a playlist of your favorite feel-good songs and dance like no one’s watching. Or lie down, close your eyes, and let the music wash over you. Instant mood boost!

Try a hobby just for fun. Paint something silly, bake cookies, write in a journal, or build a puzzle. Don’t worry about being perfect—just enjoy the process.

Take a social media break. It’s okay to unplug. Taking a break from screens, even for just an hour, can help you feel more present and less stressed. Use that time to connect with real people—or simply rest.

Treat yourself to your favorite snack. Buy yourself a treat you love—ice cream, a fancy coffee, or your favorite chips—and really enjoy it. Don’t rush, and don’t feel guilty.

Call or text a friend. Sometimes self-care means reaching out. Talking to someone you care about can be just what you need to feel connected and supported.

Take a nap. Sleep is one of the best forms of self-care. If you’re tired, allow yourself to rest. A quick power nap can do wonders for your mood and focus.

Celebrate small wins. Did you finish a homework assignment? Clean your room? Drink enough water today? Celebrate it! Self-care includes giving yourself credit for the little things.

Self-care is for everyone. No matter your age, background, or schedule, self-care matters. You don’t need a perfect plan or a bunch of money to get started. Just do something small each day that brings you joy or peace. Your mind and body will thank you.

So, this September, make a promise to yourself: to pause, breathe, and be kind to YOU. Because you deserve it—not just this month, but always.

Remember you can’t pour from an empty cup. Fill yours with the things that make you feel good—even if it’s just watching your favorite team score a touchdown or reading one more chapter of a great book.
