South Ashland Block Party Is the Place to Be

For the past few years, small businesses have been opening up along 29th Street, bringing new shopping experiences for local consumers. Two of those businesses, Local Mercantile and SoAsh Haberdash, are celebrating their opening anniversaries this spring, so their owners—Christina Wamsley, Kristen Wright, and Haley Layman—decided to throw a “party.”

The South Ashland Block Party is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 17th, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Sunday, May 18th, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. It will cover most of the 2000 block of 29th Street in South Ashland.

SoAsh Haberdash is celebrating its second anniversary, and Local Mercantile is celebrating its third anniversary. Along with “our amazing neighbors,” Teal Creek Creations, Faded, South Side Square, and The Trinity Boutique, they’re hosting two days of sidewalk sales, guest pop-up vendors, food trucks, and more.

Teal Creek Creations, which became a permanent part of SoAsh Haberdash back in November, will be there with their hat bar and patches. You can get a trucker hat with three custom patches for only $28, and you can watch as it’s made for you while you wait. They will also have a large selection of colorful bandana necklaces and plenty of charms to choose from to put on them. “We can’t wait to see what fun, fabulous creations you all come up with!”

There will be three different vendors selling thrifted items: SoAsh Thrifted, Girl Talk Thrifted, and ANicole Thrift. They will be offering items ranging from $1 to $50. Just down the road, South Side Square also sells thrifted items from their permanent location at 2010 29th Street.

Mustard Seed Florals will be there with lots of flowers to make customizable bouquets. The Beauty Lounge 606 will offer custom braids with choices of ribbon and glitter to add that fancy touch. These braids are particularly popular for young girls, teens, and tweens. Luminology Candles will also be there with their custom candles.

Faded Men’s and Women’s Salon will be open and offering custom cuts until their schedule is full. At Faded, they pride themselves on being able to provide “barber-level skilled fades.” Clipper cuts are their “niche,” but they do offer all cuts. “Shear cuts and kids cuts are always welcome.”

Trinity Boutique will be open and selling women’s boutique clothing. They’ve just announced that they will be going back to an online-only store as of June 1st, so this may be the last chance for some people to shop this cute little boutique in person.

There will be three food trucks: the 606 Coffee Company offering specialty coffee drinks, Whit’s Frozen Custard with a variety of frozen custards, and Hibachi Express. Hibachi Express is coming from Huntington and will be selling hibachi meals, egg rolls, Japanese rice balls, gyoza, crab rangoons, and milk tea.

All of the physical stores will be having sidewalk sales with discounted prices. Local Mercantile and SoAsh Haberdash will have all of their clearance merchandise outside of their stores.
