For more than five decades, Charles E. "Charlie" Hanshaw has devoted his life to the sport of amateur boxing—not for fame or fortune, but for the love of the sport and the countless young lives he has helped shape along the way. That lifelong commitment was recognized on May 10, 2026, when Hanshaw was inducted into the National Golden Gloves of America Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the DoubleTree Hotel in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The prestigious honor celebrates a lifetime spent building champions—not only inside the boxing ring, but in life.

Charlie's journey began when he was just eight years old. His father brought home a pair of boxing gloves and began teaching him the fundamentals. Those simple lessons sparked a passion that would define the rest of his life.

By age 11, Charlie had discovered his local boxing gym, close enough to walk to from home. It quickly became his second home. He immersed himself in every aspect of the sport, embracing the discipline, hard work, competition, and camaraderie that boxing offered.

His dedication paid off in spectacular fashion. During an amateur career that spanned more than 200 fights, Hanshaw captured five Regional Golden Gloves Championships, establishing himself as one of the area's premier amateur boxers.

But his greatest victories were still to come.

When his competitive career ended, Charlie simply traded his gloves for a coach's whistle. His passion shifted from winning bouts to developing young athletes, teaching not only the "sweet science" of boxing but also the values of respect, discipline, responsibility, and perseverance.

Inside the gym, he demanded hard work. Outside the gym, he expected just as much. Charlie consistently encouraged his young boxers to stay in school, maintain good grades, and become productive members of their communities.

Many of those young athletes have long since retired from boxing, yet they continue to return to the gym—or stop him around town—to thank him for the guidance that helped shape their lives. To many in the community, Charlie is more than a coach. He is a mentor, a role model, and a legend. His influence extends far beyond his hometown.

In 1991, Hanshaw acquired the Tri-State Golden Gloves Franchise, a role he has proudly held for more than 30 years. Under his leadership, the organization has provided opportunities for generations of amateur boxers to compete, grow, and pursue their dreams.

The Golden Gloves of America is one of the nation's oldest and most respected amateur boxing organizations. Since its founding in 1923, the Golden Gloves has provided young athletes with opportunities to compete in organized amateur boxing while promoting sportsmanship, discipline, character, and personal growth. The program has launched the careers of some of boxing's greatest champions, including Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar De La Hoya, and countless others. For many young athletes, Golden Gloves represents the first step toward excellence—both in the ring and in life.

Hanshaw's dedication to amateur boxing reaches well beyond the Golden Gloves. He served as a past Local Boxing Committee (LBC) President, held the Silver Gloves franchise for many years, coached USA Boxing teams in both California and Canada during the 1990s, and has promoted nearly 200 amateur boxing events throughout his career.

His loyalty to the Golden Gloves organization has never wavered. Over the years, he has built lifelong friendships through what he proudly calls the "Golden Gloves Family," remaining committed to preserving the traditions and values that have made the organization a cornerstone of amateur boxing for more than a century.

His Hall of Fame induction recognizes much more than wins, championships, and years of service.

In his official induction letter, National Golden Gloves of America President Bob Russo wrote:

"This prestigious honor is a reflection of your many years of selfless service and unwavering commitment to the Golden Gloves program. Through your leadership, perseverance, and passion for the sport, you have helped ensure that the Golden Gloves tradition continues to thrive in your region. Your efforts have touched countless lives, providing opportunity, discipline, and direction to generations of athletes." Those words perfectly capture the legacy Charlie Hanshaw has built.

For over 50 years, he has dedicated himself to ensuring that young people have a place to belong, mentors who believe in them, and opportunities to succeed. While many remember the championships he won and the tournaments he organized, those who know him best understand that his proudest accomplishments have never been measured in trophies. Instead, they are measured in the lives he has changed.

The National Golden Gloves of America Hall of Fame induction is a fitting tribute to a man whose impact has reached far beyond the ropes. Charlie Hanshaw's story is one of perseverance, humility, service, and unwavering dedication—a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of boxers and community members for years to come.
