When Advocacy Meets Adorable

Ellie’s Journey from GC Preschool to the Capitol

Greenup County Schools

Meet Ellie. When she isn’t enjoying conversation with the Governor or soaking in the view from his podium, you can find her doing what she does best—learning, growing, and thriving in a preschool classroom at GC. Ellie’s recent adventure into the world of state government was unexpected, exciting, and unforgettable, not only for her family, but for an entire community watching proudly from home.

Ellie’s trip to the Capitol all began with a family outing. Ellie, along with her mom and dad, attended a “Pre-K for All” town hall meeting in Morehead. According to her dad, Rob, advocacy is simply part of who they are. He described their household as “an active family when it comes to advocating for our community.” Rob and his wife, Kati, wanted to attend the town hall to learn more about early childhood education opportunities in Kentucky. “We wanted to learn more, as we believe that every child in Kentucky deserves access to preschool,” Rob shared.

Ellie was invited along for the experience, with a few important instructions. She was told they would need to dress up and bring their best manners. There was even a chance—though not guaranteed—that the Governor might be there. Inspired by the possibility, Ellie decided to create a special drawing just for Governor Andy Beshear, carefully coloring a picture she hoped to give him in person.

Although the Governor did not attend the town hall meeting, Ellie still managed to capture attention. Her presence, enthusiasm, and sweet gesture quickly drew the notice of both the speakers and members of the audience. Recognizing the significance of the moment, the Executive Director of “Pre-K for All” extended an invitation that would take Ellie’s experience even further—an invite to attend the State of the Commonwealth Address.

That invitation led to an evening that exceeded expectations. Greenup Countians were both shocked and excited when they saw a familiar face appear on their screens during the address. A spot had been saved for Ellie right behind the Governor as he delivered his speech. Viewers may have noticed her in her pink jacket, holding up a sign and proudly taking in the moment from a place few ever get to sit.

The experience didn’t stop there. Both Governor Beshear and Lt. Governor Jacqueline Coleman spent time talking with Ellie, asking her questions, and posing for photos. Her parents later shared that Ellie found the entire evening to be a wonderful and memorable experience.

Afterward, we had the opportunity to chat with Ellie about her big night. When asked how it was, she summed it up perfectly in her own words: “Very cool!” Perhaps most surprising of all, Ellie shared that her favorite part of the evening was listening to the Governor speak. When asked whether she thought preschool was important, she didn’t hesitate. “Preschool is cool… you learn a lot,” she said confidently.

While one might assume such an experience could spark dreams of public office, Ellie set the record straight. When asked about her future, she smiled and said, “I want to be a dentist,” as her dad chuckled in the background.

Whether she sticks with that ambition or changes her mind, one thing is certain—Ellie has already made a lasting impression and brought plenty of smiles to her community. Congratulations on your awesome experience, Ellie!
