Ashland, Russell Advance in Playoffs

ASHLAND 7-4

 

Ashland made quick work of Mason County Friday night, 48-8 on a rain-soaked field at Putnam Stadium.

 

Tanner Stutler threw for 226 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for another to send the Tomcats into the second round of the playoffs next week at Highlands. Cam Davis rushed for 51 yards and two scores. Brody Simpkins added a rushing score as well. Justin Hughes hauled in four catches for 78 yards and a touchdown. Dylan Duckwyler had a 61-yard touchdown. Trevonte Taylor rounded out the scoring with a receiving touchdown.

 

Simpkins led the Tomcats defensively with six tackles, one for loss and an interception. Rieday Rucker and Luke McCoy had sacks.

 

Ashland heads to Highland Friday at 7 p.m. for their first meeting since 2014, a 30-15 win by the Bluebirds. Ashland has lost 15 in a row to Highlands and will look for their first win over the Bluebirds since a 38-6 victory in 1954.

 

BOYD 6-5

 

Boyd County battled but could not overcome Covington Catholic Friday night in the opening round of the playoffs as the Lions fell, 48-21.

 

Jace Manning led the Lions with 233 yards and a touchdown in the loss. Kaleb Kelley had eight grabs for 96 yards and a score. Conner Davis had one catch for 50 yards.

 

Kaiden Nottingham led the Lions defense with 10 stops and a TFL. James McDaniels and Kaleb Kelley each had six tackles.

 

Boyd closes the season at 6-5.

 

FAIRVIEW 5-6

 

Fairview fell short to Sayre Friday night, 44-14 in the opening round of the playoffs.

 

Jace Murray ran for 137 yards and two scores in the loss. Anthony Vendetti hauled in a 41-yard catch.

 

Fairview closes the season at 5-6.

 

GREENUP COUNTY 4-7

 

Greenup saw its season come to a close in a 35-7 loss at Highlands Friday night.

 

Jasper Davis threw for 97 yards and a touchdown but was picked off three times in the loss. He rushed for 60 yards. Kasey Gammon had the lone Musketeers score with a reception.

 

Jaxon Law led the Musketeers with seven tackles. Eric Campbell added six.

 

Greenup closes the season at 4-7.

 

RACELAND 9-1

 

Raceland was on a bye after two teams dropped from the Class A playoffs.

 

The Rams will entertain Nicholas County Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

 

RUSSELL 9-2

 

Kaiden Benge rushed for 140 yards and two scores to lead Russell to a 48-0 win over Carroll County to open the playoffs. Ben Brinkman added a rushing score. Jayden Frasure threw a pair of touchdown passes in the win, one to Cayden Pennington and another to Jordan Rowe. Russell had three interceptions in the win, two going for scores. Grayson Kiser and Shawn Deskins had pick-6s and Cayden Pennington added the third pick.

 

Russell welcomes Bourbon County Friday night at 7 p.m. for round two of the playoffs.
