ASHLAND 8-1

It was a shootout at Putnam Stadium Friday night between Ashland and Johnson Central with a district championship looming in the balance.

 

With 26 seconds to play and trailing in the contest, Braxton Jennings cracked off a huge return on the ensuing Johnson Central kickoff and LaBryant Strader led his Tomcats to paydirt for a 41-36 victory.

 

Strader’s final pass of the night went to Dylan Duckwyler in the endzone with four ticks left on the regulation clock to seal the win. Duckwyler was the primary target for Strader as the duo connected for three scores and 84 of Strader’s 236 yards. Strader went 19 for 25 on the night through the air. Jennings hauled in four catches for 67 yards and two scores. Cam Davis added another.

 

Ashland heads to Simon Kenton Friday night to close the regular season.

 

BOYD COUNTY 5-4

Boyd County is looking to find it's best football as the Lions close the season with a pair of non-district opponents.

 

The Lions wasted no time pushing the game out of reach Friday night with a 42-20 walloping of Lawrence County at home. Rhett Holbrook and Marcus Brumfield went over the century mark on the night as the Lions ran for 258 yards. Holbrook led the way with 149 yards on 11 totes and four touchdowns. Brumfield added 116 on 16 rushes with two scores as well. Cole Hicks had a pair of interceptions on the defensive side of the ball while hauling in five catches for 31 yards.

 

Boyd County welcomes Pikeville Friday night.

 

FAIRVIEW 4-4

Fairview fell 50-0 to Paris Friday night. No stats were reported.

 

Fairview’s final regular season game at Paden City, WV has been cancelled. The Eagles will travel to Sayre on Nov. 1 to open the postseason.

 














GREENUP COUNTY 7-2

 

After falling in a shootout with Johnson Central last week, Greenup County looked to get back to its winning ways when the Musketeers traveled to Rowan County.

 

Tyson Sammons lit up the scoreboard with five total touchdowns, four through the air and another on the ground to give Greenup a 53-18 win over the Vikings. Sammons ran for 122 yards on five carries and threw for 87 more. Drew Boggs caught three passes, two for scores. Collin Melvin and Landry Lewis each had one. Tyson Law kicked in a rushing touchdown.

 

Greenup closed the regular season with a trip to Fleming County.

 

RUSSELL 7-3

After a 7-6 halftime deficit to East Carter, Russell elected to narrow down its playbook in the second half and the outcome worked to perfection.

 

Kaden Benge became the Russell workhorse from the backfield as he ran for 105 yards on 23 carries and a pair of scores to lift Red Devils to a district champion win over the Raiders, 23-14. Elijah Hankins worked a clean night in the passing game, throwing for 98 yards while rushing for a touchdown. Ben Totten added a field goal in the second half that gave Russell the lead for good.

 

Russell exercises its bye week before playing host to a pair of playoff games when the postseason begins on Nov. 8.

 


RACELAND 6-3

Raceland had 11 possessions Friday night when the Rams welcomed Nicholas County.

 

The Rams scored on 10 of those in a 65-0 rout of the Bluejackets to claim their fifth consecutive district crown. Raceland had seven rushing touchdowns in the lopsided win with Shannon Marushi and Jonah Arnett each finding paydirt twice on the ground. Arnett ran for 40 yards including a 36-yard score while Marushi tacked on 39. Cam Brewer, Landon Bloss and Charlie Vanderhoof also added rushing scores. Bryson Rowsey and Arnett each caught a touchdown pass from Parker Ison who threw for 122 yards after taking over for Jacob Waller to start the second quarter. Waller threw for 74 yards in the opening frame before taking the rest of the night off outside of his normal kicking duties.

 

Raceland’s defense held Nicholas County to three total yards of offense including minus 10 rushing yards for a team that averaged over 260 yards a night on the ground.

 

Raceland closes the regular season at LCA Friday night and has guaranteed at least two home playoff games when the postseason begins on Nov. 8.
