ASHLAND 2-0
Ashland took longer to travel to Nicholasville than it did putting away West Jessamine Friday night. The Tomcats put the running clock in motion by halftime in a 42-6 beatdown of the Colts.
Braxton Jennings made a pair of house calls in the opening frame to stake Ashland with a 14-0 lead. Jennings scores measured four and eight yards. Cam Davis pushed the lead to 21-0 with a 31-yard scamper to end the first.
LaBryant Strader joined the rushing barrage with a 6-yard plunge to open the second quarter then followed with a 17-yd touchdown pass to Davis before the half to start the running clock. Maverick Ashby closed the Ashland scoring with a 3-yard run in the third.
Jennings led the Tomcats with 55 yards on eight totes. Davis had 42 rushing yards and 58 through the air.

BOYD COUNTY 1-1
Boyd County looked poised to take down Bell County Friday night after racing out to a 24-14 lead at the half. But the Lions ran out of gas in the final stanza as the Bobcats closed the final 12 minutes by outscoring their opponent 14-0 which including a game-winning touchdown in the final two minutes for a 36-31 win.
Thomas Crawford hauled in three catches—two for scores—for 82 yards. Brody Castle added four for 56. Cole Hicks had five catches for 69 yards. Rhett Holbrook went 18 for 31 in the passing attack for 270 yards. Erik Germann and Holbrook each added rushing scores.
Boyd County visits East Carter Friday night.
FAIRVIEW 1-0
Fairview was idle this week. The Eagles welcome Betsy Layne Friday night for their home opener.
GREENUP COUNTY 2-0
Tyson and Eli Sammons have both rewritten the record books at Greenup. Eli shattered nearly every passing record in his time as the signal caller for the Musketeers. Tyson has done the same in the rushing chapter from the same position. However, the younger Sammons did something Eli did not do, won three consecutive over their rival Russell.
Sammons rushed for 149 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Musketeers hammered the Devils in Russell, 38-9 in the Backyard Brawl. Greenup took the lead with 9:10 to play in the opening frame on a 24-yard Jasper Davis run and never looked back. Ben Totten put the Devils on the board with a 29-yard field goal five minutes later, but it would be all green and gold the rest of the way.
Waylon Perkins and Sammons tacked on a pair of rushing scores in the second. Sammons second score of the night came in the third after the senior scampered 34 yards to paydirt. Landry Lewis hauled in a 40-yard pick six to put the running clock in motion with 5:37 to play in the third.
Perkins had 97 rushing yards on 17 totes. Davis added 38 on three touches.
Greenup exercises its bye week and heads to East Carter on Sept. 13.
RACELAND 1-1
It looked like old school Raceland football Friday night when the Rams welcomed Letcher County Central.
Looking to bounce back after a loss to Ashland to open the season, the Rams used a powerful rushing attack in the second half that turned the offense into the defense against a Cougars comeback.
After the Rams took a 21-14 lead, the defense forced a turnover on downs with just over seven minutes to play in the game. The offense snapped the ball 12 times on the ensuing drive with the final play of the drive being a kneel down by quarterback Parker Ison at the Cougars 2-yard line in victory formation for the win.
Raceland racked up 265 yards on the ground on 50 attempts with over 200 coming in the second half. Landen Stiltner carried the Rams with a career-high 169 and two scores including a 45-yard dash to open the final stanza that put the Rams in front for good.
Ayden Cooper got the Rams on the board to start the contest with a 2-yard score. He took the Rams to the two after snatching a 24-yard pass from Ison. Stiltner’s first score of the night came 18 seconds before the half on a sweep to the left from seven yards out and a 14-7 lead at the break.
Ison threw for 76 yards and ran for 42 more. Jonah Arnett had 51 yards on four catches. Shannon Marushi tacked on 42 rushing yards on five carries in the fourth quarter.
Raceland exercises its bye week this week and will welcome the two-time defending Class A state champion Pikeville on Sept. 13.
RUSSELL 0-2
Russell took a tough loss to Greenup County Friday night, falling 38-9 in the Devils home opener.
Ben Totten gave the Devils their first points of the night on a 29-yard field goal late in the first quarter. But the Musketeers would roll off 30 unanswered to put the clock in motion with 5:37 to play in the third quarter. Russell’s only other points came with 2:19 to play in the contest when Elijah Hankins hit Caden Pennington for an 82-yard pass. Hankins had 120 yards through the air but was picked off twice. Pennington racked up 100 receiving yards on three catches. Jayden Frasure led Russell’s rushing attack with 43 yards on seven carries.
Russell welcomes South Point Friday night.
